Unlocking the door to new hope

Habitat NI celebrates 21st birthday with The Priests

Habitat for Humanity Northern Ireland is celebrating 21 years building hope with an evening of music and song with The Priests on 29th May at St. Patrick’s RC Cathedral, Armagh. Funds raised from the performance will help unlock the door to a brighter future for thousands of families in need of a decent place to call home.

Since 1994, 28,000 volunteers from across the community have practically engaged in Habitat NI’s work at home and around the world. Barriers have been broken down and stronger communities created where everyone has the opportunity to grow.

At the concert, The Priests’ will perform musical favourites including a moving rendition of ‘Love Can Build a Bridge’, a reminder of the bridges that have, and will be, built through Habitat’s work.

Jenny Williams, Chief Executive of Habitat NI said: “We are delighted that The Priests will perform this special concert to celebrate the hope that local people have helped us build for 21 years. The funds raised will enable us to serve thousands more families in desperate need of simple homes. Tonight, and every night, 1.6 billion people will go to sleep without a decent place to live.

Simple homes save lives. The average cost of a Habitat home in the developing world is just £1,235. As we look ahead, we are determined to use this anniversary as a platform to get more support to help families unlock the door to brighter futures. ” Ms Williams continued.

Tickets cost £20 each plus a standard booking fee. They are available on the Habitat NI website: www.habitatni.co.uk; from Armagh Parish Office, 028 3752 2813; and Habitat ReStore, Riverside Centre, Young Street, Lisburn.

A National Eucharistic Congress will take place in Knock on Saturday/Sunday, 26th/27th September 2015. It is customary that the host country of an International Congress would hold a National Congress before the following  International one, which is due to take place in Cebu, Philippines in January 2016.

The theme of our National Congress will be: ‘Christ Our Hope’.

The proceedings will commence each day at 10am with morning prayer, followed by talks, workshops and various events around Knock Shrine. Archbishop Eamon Martin will celebrate the Mass on the Saturday just prior to his departure to Rome for the Synod on the Family.

On Saturday night after some early evening talks; ‘Vespers’ will be recited followed by a ‘Concert of Praise’ in the Basilica. ‘Compline’ will then be recited after which there will be a ‘Candle-lit Procession’ and an ‘All Night-Vigil’ in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Both afternoons will follow the usual Knock programme, and the Congress will conclude with Benediction after the afternoon programme on the Sunday. Marquees will be set up for the ‘Youth Space’, ‘Children’s Events’, ‘Exhibition Space’ and for other such events. An outside screen may also be provided over the weekend. Following the successful IEC 2012 of which you were all a part and helped to bring in under budget, there is money left over to help defray the costs of this event.
